SUMMARY:NordNET PhD Autumn School: Modeling Energy System Integration and Sustainable Transport
DESCRIPTION:NordNET is organising an autumn school open to all interested PhD students on energy system modelling\, focusing on energy system integration and sustainable transport. The school targets PhD students who have a basic understanding of system modelling or wish for an intense introduction to it. During the course\, the students will work through the following theories and topics: \n\nSector integration in energy system models\nHeat modelling\nGreen gases\, electrolyser modelling\, gas networks and markets\nEnergy hubs\, conversion technologies\, and green fuels\nModelling transport and the characteristics of transport systems\nBatteries\, electric vehicles\, and charging infrastructure\nModelling and assessing market designs\, policies\, and regulations\n\nThe course will end with a field trip. Initially\, we will build a simplified electricity system planning model with different fundamental components of future power systems with high shares of variable wind and solar electricity supply\, including different types of time-varying and dispatchable generation and storage technologies like battery and hydrogen storage.\nIn the second half of the day\, we will expand the electricity-focused capacity expansion model with data from other sectors. This will cover demands from the transport\, heating\, and industry sectors\, as well as the modeling of the various technology options that couple the sector to the electricity system. We will learn how different power-to-X and demand-side management options work towards integrating renewable electricity.\nFor the examples and integrated exercises\, the open-source energy system modeling framework PyPSA (Python for Power System Analysis) will be used. \nEnergy Hubs\nThis lecture will provide details on the technologies and concepts necessary to include energy hubs\, the related conversion processes\, and interdependencies between the sectors into the larger model presented on the first day. We will discuss the characteristics of hydrogen and green fuel production and their relevance for system modeling. Further\, we will discuss processes in energy hubs and critical links that need to be included in system modeling to reflect the influential drivers of decarbonizing all sectors. \nMarket Design\n \nPart I of the lecture will introduce the interconnections between electricity\, gas\, and fuel market regulations and how to model these looking into the EU ETS and carbon markets with applications in carbon accounting and hydrogen regulations. Part II will introduce basic market design issues for electricity markets. We use Bob Wilson’s paper as a starting point and discuss integrated and decentralized market designs in electricity markets. \nTransportation Sector\n \nThis lecture has three parts: (1) Transport modeling: The basics – Part I will introduce transport modeling challenges associated with projecting transitions. We will start with basic\, standard modeling techniques: e.g. linear optimization\, stock turnover models\, etc that project technology based on exogenous demand. We will introduce how demands are projected and how decisions on technology adoptions are made. Then we will discuss the existing gaps and new challenges associated with modeling transformative changes using the traditional models. (2) Transport modeling: Consumer choice – Part II will introduce choice modeling and the methods of combining a choice model within a linear optimization model. (3) Transport modeling: Electrification and Big Data – Part III discusses the latest research on modeling the impacts of electrification of the transport sector on investments and operation decisions in the electricity system. The intention is to show how the modeling of the integration of the electric and the transport sectors can be improved\, and shall not be considered as definite findings. We will also (very) briefly introduce some of the latest research on using big data to understand the spatial and temporal patterns of transportation demand and modeling efforts. \nTransportation Technologies\nThe module focuses on e-mobility technologies and integration in the electrical grid. Electric vehicles (drivetrain and battery technologies\, onboard chargers\, and charging standards are discussed. Challenges and opportunities for grid integration of mobility assets are presented with examples considering\, charging capabilities\, grid characteristics\, user behavior\, and smart charging strategies. Examples from research projects and common discussions will conclude the module.\nLearning outcomes: Explain the fundamentals of EVs and chargers\, discuss grid integration challenges\, and perform power and energy calculations. \nGreen Gas Modelling\nIn this lecture\, we focus on the modeling of integrated energy systems planning and solution algorithms for large-scale stochastic programs. On the application side\, we study two energy system planning models: REORIENT and EMPIRE. The objective of this is to learn how to (1) model multi-timescale uncertainty in long-term energy system planning problems\, (2) model multi-carrier energy systems\, including power\, natural gas\, hydrogen\, and CCS systems\, and (3) integrate investment\, retrofit\, and abandonment decisions in an energy system planning model. On the methodology side\, we focus on state-of-the-art solution algorithms for multi-horizon stochastic programming\, a type of multi-stage stochastic programming with block separable recourse. We study how to exploit the structure of such a program and develop decomposition algorithms to solve large-scale energy system planning problems under multi-timescale uncertainty. \nMore information\nPlease contact enerforsk@cbs.dk if you have any further questions.

She has served as the co-chair of Copenhagen School of Energy’s (CSEI) Advisory Board since 2020. \n\nChloé le Coq (Univ. Paris-Panthéon-Assas/CERRE)\nChloé Le Coq is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Paris Panthéon-Assas (CRED) and a Research Fellow at the Stockholm School of Economics (SITE). She has held visiting positions at Purdue University\, the University of California Energy Institute at Berkeley\, and the National University of Singapore.\nHer research focuses on industrial organization\, law and economics\, with a particular emphasis on energy markets and their regulation. Her recent work includes empirical studies on nuclear safety\, technology-mix competition\, interconnections\, and energy security issues. \n\nGeorgios Savvidis (TransnetBW)\nGeorgios Savvidis is an energy system expert at TransnetBW\, one of Germany’s Transmission System Operators. With over 10 years of experience in power markets and energy system models\, he has led various projects that bridge the gap between academia\, politics\, and industry. His current work at TransnetBW focuses on identifying future trends that impact current grid planning processes\, utilizing advanced methodologies and tools. Georgios is also the co-study leader of the recently launched flagship study “Adequacy 2050\,” which aims to ensure the reliability and sustainability of the energy grid by 2050. \n\nFelipe Gonzalez Venegas (ACER)\nFelipe is a Policy Officer in the Flexibility and Resilience team at ACER\, working in the new  Flexibility Needs Assessment process. Felipe previously worked as a consultant at Artelys\, focused on power systems flexibility and electricity markets. He holds a PhD from Université Paris Saclay where he studied frameworks for the flexible integration of electric vehicles into the grid\, and Masters in engineering from Universidad de Chile and CentraleSupélec. \n\nEllen Beckstedde (FSR)\nEllen is a research associate at the Florence School of Regulation (FSR)\, where she is co-director of the Evolution of Electricity Markets in Europe course. She holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from KU Leuven and Vlerick Business School\, Belgium. During her PhD\, she examined distribution network planning\, flexibility mechanisms\, and regulatory sandboxes using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. She graduated from KU Leuven as an engineer specialising in energy in 2019. \n\nLaurent Schmitt (Digital4Grids)\nLaurent Schmitt has joined Dcbel early January 2022 as CEO of Dcbel Europe as well as Head of Utilities while funding Digital4Grids. He has been working for the last 25 years through the Automation\, IT and Digitisation of the Power Industry. Before joining dcbel\, he was the Secretary General of ENTSO-E for the past four years and Global Smart Grid Strategy Leader at General Electric Grid Solutions.\nLaurent worked in Europe\, the United States and Asia\, on all sectors of the electricity value chain from power generation controls\, intro trading and market\, grid management as well as DER integration and microgrid community.\nHe graduated in Power System Engineering from Supélec in Paris and holds an Executive MBA from INSEAD\, France. \n\nMark van Stiphout (DG Ener\, EC)\nMark van Stiphout is currently Deputy Head of Unit in DG Energy in the unit that is responsible for Research\, Innovation\, Competitiveness and Digitalisation. His responsibilities include the Digitalisation of Energy Action Plan and the Net Zero Industry Act\, and he is also involved in the EU’s energy research and innovation agenda and the the Energy Union Competitiveness Progress Report.\nUntil the 1st of November 2014 he was a member of the Cabinet of the Commissioner for Energy\, Günther H. Oettinger\, who he advised on nuclear energy and energy research\, as well as smart grids\, retail markets and the relations with Russia. This included for example the Commission’s work on nuclear safety and the trilateral negotiations with Russia and Ukraine on gas supply.\nBefore that he was assistant to the Director-General for Energy\, and from 2006 to 2010 he was responsible for the liberalisation of the internal market for natural gas as Policy Officer in DG Energy in the Electricity and Gas Unit.\nPrevious roles include consultancy on renewable energy projects at Ecofys and market analyst at Cogas Energie. \n\nJack M. Initially\, we will build a simplified electricity system planning model with different fundamental components of future power systems with high shares of variable wind and solar electricity supply\, including different types of time-varying and dispatchable generation and storage technologies like battery and hydrogen storage.\nIn the second half of the day\, we will expand the electricity-focused capacity expansion model with data from other sectors. This will cover demands from the transport\, heating\, and industry sectors\, as well as the modeling of the various technology options that couple the sector to the electricity system. We will learn how different power-to-X and demand-side management options work towards integrating renewable electricity.\nFor the examples and integrated exercises\, the open-source energy system modeling framework PyPSA (Python for Power System Analysis) will be used. \nEnergy Hubs\nThis lecture will provide details on the technologies and concepts necessary to include energy hubs\, the related conversion processes\, and interdependencies between the sectors into the larger model presented on the first day. We will discuss the characteristics of hydrogen and green fuel production and their relevance for system modeling. Further\, we will discuss processes in energy hubs and critical links that need to be included in system modeling to reflect the influential drivers of decarbonizing all sectors. \nTransportation Sector\nThis lecture has three parts: (1) Transport modeling: The basics – Part I will introduce transport modeling challenges associated with projecting transitions. We will start with basic\, standard modeling techniques: e.g.\, linear optimization\, stock turnover models\, etc\, that project technology based on exogenous demand. We will introduce how demands are projected and how decisions on technology adoptions are made. Then we will discuss the existing gaps and new challenges associated with modeling transformative changes using the traditional models. (2) Transport modeling: Consumer choice – Part II will introduce choice modeling and the methods of combining a choice model within a linear optimization model. (3) Transport modeling: Electrification and Big Data – Part III discusses the latest research on modeling the impacts of electrification of the transport sector on investments and operation decisions in the electricity system. The intention is to show how the modeling of the integration of the electric and transport sectors can be improved\, and shall not be considered as definitive findings. We will also (very) briefly introduce some of the latest research on using big data to understand the spatial and temporal patterns of transportation demand and modeling efforts. \nTransportation Technologies\nThe module focuses on e-mobility technologies and integration in the electrical grid. Electric vehicles (drivetrain and battery technologies\, onboard chargers\, and charging standards are discussed. Challenges and opportunities for grid integration of mobility assets are presented with examples considering charging capabilities\, grid characteristics\, user behavior\, and smart charging strategies. Examples from research projects and common discussions will conclude the module.\nLearning outcomes: Explain the fundamentals of EVs and chargers\, discuss grid integration challenges\, and perform power and energy calculations. \nMarket Design\nPart I of the lecture will introduce the interconnections between electricity\, gas\, and fuel market regulations and how to model these\, looking into the EU ETS and carbon markets with applications in carbon accounting and hydrogen regulations. Part II will introduce basic market design issues for electricity markets.
