SUMMARY:From Dependency to Resilience: The Future of Energy Security
DESCRIPTION:In light of geopolitical uncertainty\, the ongoing energy transitions and growing need for a resilient infrastructure\, the CSEI workshop “From Dependency to Resilience: The Future of Energy Security” provides a forum for exchange across sectors and disciplines. \n\n\n\nThe event will bring together policymakers\, industry representatives and researchers to discuss how security of supply\, decarbonisation objectives and infrastructure resilience can be addressed in an integrated manner. Participants will include representatives from\, among others\, the European Commission\, NATO\, the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) and the European Initiative for Energy Security (EIES). \n\n\n\nOutline of the day: \n\n\n\nThe workshop will open with a keynote contribution by Robert Habeck who sets the scene and outlines the most important developments in the field of energy security and the energy transition. This will be followed by three thematic sessions focusing on geopolitical dependencies in energy supply\, aligning security of supply with the energy transition\, and the resilience of energy infrastructure. Each session will combine expert input with moderated discussion. In the afternoon\, interactive breakout groups will allow participants to exchange perspectives in smaller settings\, with rotating topics and group composition. The day will conclude with a plenary session summarising the main insights\, which will inform a subsequent publication capturing the workshop’s key findings.

SUMMARY:NordNET PhD Summer School: Modeling Energy System Integration and Sustainable Transport
DESCRIPTION:NordNET is organising a summer school open to all interested PhD students on energy system modelling\, focusing on energy system integration and sustainable transport. The school targets PhD students who have a basic understanding of system modelling or wish for an intense introduction to it. Initially\, we will build a simplified electricity system planning model with different fundamental components of future power systems with high shares of variable wind and solar electricity supply\, including different types of time-varying and dispatchable generation and storage technologies like battery and hydrogen storage.\nIn the second half of the day\, we will expand the electricity-focused capacity expansion model with data from other sectors. This will cover demands from the transport\, heating\, and industry sectors\, as well as the modeling of the various technology options that couple the sector to the electricity system. We will learn how different power-to-X and demand-side management options work towards integrating renewable electricity.\nFor the examples and integrated exercises\, the open-source energy system modeling framework PyPSA (Python for Power System Analysis) will be used. \nEnergy Hubs\nThis lecture will provide details on the technologies and concepts necessary to include energy hubs\, the related conversion processes\, and interdependencies between the sectors into the larger model presented on the first day. We will discuss the characteristics of hydrogen and green fuel production and their relevance for system modeling. Further\, we will discuss processes in energy hubs and critical links that need to be included in system modeling to reflect the influential drivers of decarbonizing all sectors. \nIndustry Transformation\nEnergy-intensive industries\, such as steel\, aluminium\, cement\, chemicals\, and pulp & paper\, are considered as hard-to-abate\, hard-to-electrify\, and hard-to-transition. This lecture sketches transition options for the mentioned industries from their present and typically fossil fuel-based starting point to a defossilised operation to be reached by mid-century. The focus will be on a technical feasibility linked to economic viability aiming for sustainable solutions. Industries are regarded from a technical but also geospatial perspective. Defossilisation pathways are highlighted\, including transitioning to other energy carriers but also CO2 management where required. CO2 may be of fossil feedstock origin and may have to be sequestered with carbon capture and utilization opportunities in the case of sustainable or unavoidable CO2 sources. The industry transition discussion is also embedded in an energy-industry transition context with research results obtained by applying the leading energy-industry system modelling framework LUT Energy System Transition Model (LUT-ESTM) and the macro-economic demand projection tool LUT-DEMAND. \nTransportation Sector\nThis lecture has three parts: (1) Transport modeling: The basics – Part I will introduce transport modeling challenges associated with projecting transitions. We will start with basic\, standard modeling techniques: e.g.\, linear optimization\, stock turnover models\, etc\, that project technology based on exogenous demand. We will introduce how demands are projected and how decisions on technology adoptions are made. Then we will discuss the existing gaps and new challenges associated with modeling transformative changes using the traditional models. (2) Transport modeling: Consumer choice – Part II will introduce choice modeling and the methods of combining a choice model within a linear optimization model. (3) Transport modeling: Electrification and Big Data – Part III discusses the latest research on modeling the impacts of electrification of the transport sector on investments and operation decisions in the electricity system. The intention is to show how the modeling of the integration of the electric and transport sectors can be improved\, and shall not be considered as definitive findings. We will also (very) briefly introduce some of the latest research on using big data to understand the spatial and temporal patterns of transportation demand and modeling efforts. \nTransportation Technologies\nThe module focuses on e-mobility technologies and integration in the electrical grid. Electric vehicles (drivetrain and battery technologies\, onboard chargers\, and charging standards are discussed. Challenges and opportunities for grid integration of mobility assets are presented with examples considering charging capabilities\, grid characteristics\, user behavior\, and smart charging strategies. Examples from research projects and common discussions will conclude the module.\nLearning outcomes: Explain the fundamentals of EVs and chargers\, discuss grid integration challenges\, and perform power and energy calculations. \nMarket Design\nPart I of the lecture will introduce the interconnections between electricity\, gas\, and fuel market regulations and how to model these\, looking into the EU ETS and carbon markets with applications in carbon accounting and hydrogen regulations. Part II will introduce basic market design issues for electricity markets. She has 20 years of industrial experience with her past leadership roles in sectors such as chemicals\, mining and cement from Topsoe and FLSmidth where these sectors are characterized as hard-to-abate and in need of carbon capture. At Ramboll\, she is responsible for commercial and technical leadership and management of the Competence Center. Center’s business offerings are as due diligence\, concept\, feasibility\, Pre-FEED\, FEED\, and Owners Engineer studies of the CCUS value chain as well as EPCM and system integration projects. Burcin holds executive MBA from Copenhagen Business School and a PhD from UC Santa Barbara followed by a post-doc at Berkeley. She also serves as a board member at EIT Raw Materials where she is involved in EU-level transaction evaluation and public-private partnership structures in the sustainable mining space. \n\nChristian Breyer (LUT University)\nChristian Breyer is Professor for Solar Economy at LUT University\, Finland. His major expertise is the integrated research of technological and economic characteristics of renewable energy systems specialising in energy system modeling for 100% renewable energy\, on a local but also global scale. Publications cover integrated sector analyses with power\, heat\, transport\, desalination\, industry\, and negative CO2 emissions. The Power-to-X Economy comprises most of his research and 1.0⁰C pathways are increasingly investigated in addition to the 1.5⁰C standard. \n\nJasmin Sharzad (Danish Ministry of Climate\, Energy and Utilities)\nJasmin Sharzad is Deputy Head of Division at the research and subsurface section within the Danish Ministry of Climate\, Energy and Utilities. Her section is in charge of the Danish CCS regulation\, supporting political decisions and creating the framework for the Danish CCS subsidy schemes. She holds a MSc in international business and politics. \n\nThomas Ollendorff (CarbonCuts)\nThomas is Head of Commercial and Finance and is part of the management team. Thomas is an experienced leader with a long career in the Danish energy industry. For many years\, he has been involved in the development of the Nordic natural gas market and has led complex commercial negotiations as well as a number of M&A processes. In addition\, Thomas has worked on the development of the biogas market in Denmark as well as the early establishment of hydrogen production in the Nordics. Thomas has a master’s degree in economics from the University of Copenhagen. \n\nLasse Læbo Mathiesen (CSEI\, CBS)\nLasse is postdoc at CSEI and Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Managemen working on social topic in infrastructure. His focus is primarily on the use of Environmental economics tools to understand acceptance and trust in infrastructure development. As part of the project on Public acceptance of carbon capture utilisation and storage (PaoCCUS) funded by INNO-CCS he has worked on understanding both local and national acceptance of CCS and how information can “help” shape public opinion. \n\nCathrine Ringstad (Bellona)\nCathrine Ringstad is Senior advisor CCS at the Bellona Foundation. She holds a master’s degree in physics and a PhD in rock mechanics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Cathrine has extensive research and industry experience within geophysics and rock mechanics\, and long proven skills in management and dissemination of multidisciplinary projects. She has been involved in CCS activities for ten years with focus on CO2 storage and the CCS value chain. At Bellona\, Cathrine is working with CCS legislation and policy frameworks in Norway and the EU. This includes standardisation where she is the convenor for TC 474/WG4 on geological storage for the European standardisation body CEN. \n\nMikkel Hansen (decarbonICE)\nMikkel Navarro Hansen is COO and Co-founder of DecarbonICE\, where he leads the development of innovative CO₂ transport solutions that enable scalable carbon capture and storage. With more than 30 years of experience spanning maritime operations\, shipping\, logistics\, innovation and executive leadership\, Mikkel combines practical industry expertise with strategic business development. Prior to founding DecarbonICE\, he served as CEO of Maritime & Logistics Innovation Denmark (MDC)\, held senior leadership roles within the Maersk Group and Nordic Tankers\, and was Head of Marine HR at Ultranav. Mikkel is a Master Mariner from SIMAC and holds an MBA in Shipping and Logistics from Copenhagen Business School. \n\nFrancesca Di Bartolomeo (SINTEF Industry)\nFrancesca Di Bartolomeo is a Senior Research Scientist at SINTEF Industry\, specialising in industrial biotechnology\, fermentation\, microbial cell biology and circular bio-based processes. She holds a PhD in yeast cell biology from TU Graz (Austria) and completed postdoctoral research in systems and synthetic biology at Chalmers University (Sweden). Since 2019\, she has coordinated\, managed or contributed to leadership roles in more than 20 EU and national R&D projects\, building a portfolio of approximately 190 million NOK. Her work focuses on CO2 utilisation\, sustainable food and feed\, microbial protein and lipid production\, bio-based materials and circular bioeconomy solutions. She has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and contributes actively to scientific dissemination\, industry collaboration and project development.
