Workshop: Electricity market reform in Europe

March 31, 2023 @ 09:30 - 16:00

Free

Join us for a workshop on Electricity market reform in Europe organised jointly by Oxford Institute for Energy Studies and Copenhagen School of Energy Infrastructure.

After a good year of soaring wholesale prices, many have come to blame market design for translating gas price increases into electricity revenues, irrespective of the primary energy source. As a consequence, the European Commission is now consulting a wide range of reform options for the European electricity market. Beyond the current energy crisis and short-term issues, the concern remains that market design is not fit for deep penetration of renewable electricity, with either low price levels or uncertain changes in market design jeopardizing the large-scale investments that are needed.

Topics for discussion include:

  • Markets within the framework of infrastructure addressing issues of congestion, investment perspectives and innovation
  • Fundamental reforms vs. incremental change including the conundrum of energy only and zero marginal cost market, a perspective for nodal pricing and decentralization
  • Market interventions meaning price-caps, hedging, contracts for difference among others
Each panel will take up 90 minutes and feature several expert impulses but giving room for actual discussions among the participants.
