Welcome to our new PhD students at CSEI!

We are excited to welcome Salena Yuanqi Wang and Emmanuel K Ngetich as new PhD researchers to our team at the CSEI. Both join international research initiatives shaping the future of sustainable energy systems in Europe and beyond.

Salena Yuanqi W.

Salena joins CSEI as part of the POTENT project, which explores how Europe’s ports can become catalysts for the clean energy transition. By transforming into energy hubs, ports can accelerate the EU’s mission to become climate neutral by 2050—supporting the European Green Deal and REPowerEU objectives. The project investigates renewable energy and green fuel infrastructure gaps, integration of ports into electricity grids, socio-economic and regulatory challenges, and governance and business models to maximize value creation and stakeholder engagement.

Salena holds degrees from the Stockholm School of Economics, The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and the University of Warwick, and has worked with the World Food Programme and the Institute of Development Studies. Her research combines technical, economic, and policy perspectives to support sustainable port transformation.

Emmanuel K Ngetich

Emmanuel is part of the Ideal4Green project, which develops and integrates microgrids to support resilient, low-carbon energy systems. The project addresses technical, economic, and regulatory challenges, and trains doctoral candidates in designing, operating, and evaluating interconnected microgrids to optimize energy supply, flexibility, and decarbonisation.

Emmanuel holds an MSc in Energy Economics and Renewable Energy from the University of Rwanda and has worked with the SEI – Stockholm Environment Institute Institute, Enzi Ijayo Africa Initiative, and Fintellicon Green Solutions. His research focuses on policy, planning, and economic feasibility frameworks to support the sustainable integration of microgrids in energy transition pathways.

We are delighted to have Salena and Emmanuel on board and look forward to working with them on the energy transition. Their research will contribute to advancing CSEI’s mission of building the knowledge base for Europe’s sustainable energy future.
